The general rule is between 18 and 24 months. Some children require a bit more time to be comfortable. If an area of concern is noticed, then the child should see a dentist as soon as possible.
At least every six months for a cleaning. Seeing your dentist twice a year lets us monitor your oral health and catch problems before they become uncomfortable or require more comprehensive and expensive treatment. Depending on the diagnosis, we may suggest more frequent visits.
Bleeding gums are an early indicator of gingivitis, usually caused by plaque or calculus accumulating under the gumline. Left untreated it can lead to bone loss and eventual tooth loss. Gingivitis can be reversed with proper brushing and flossing within a few weeks — but if bleeding persists two to three weeks, come and see us.
For a permanent tooth, time is critical. Place the tooth back in the socket immediately — don't worry about getting it straight — and call us right away. If you are uncomfortable doing that, put it in a glass of milk and get to the dentist as quickly as possible. For a baby tooth, do not reinsert it, as this can damage the permanent tooth underneath. When in doubt: milk, and see us immediately.
Baby teeth hold space for the permanent teeth that follow. If one decays or is removed too early, that space is lost and can usually only be regained through orthodontic treatment. Infected baby teeth can also cause permanent teeth to develop improperly, resulting in stains, pits and weaker teeth.
There is no difference — they are two names for the same restoration.
No. When carbamide peroxide — the active whitening agent — contacts water, hydrogen peroxide is released, which whitens the teeth. Bleaching does not soften, demineralise or weaken them. Over-the-counter products do whiten, but many are abrasive enough to damage teeth with extended use or misuse, so supervision by your dentist is the safest and most effective route.
Yes. Implants act as substitutes for natural tooth roots and rely on the jawbone for support. Strategically placed, they can support permanently cemented bridges and eliminate the need for a denture. The cost is higher, but the result more closely resembles the feel of real teeth. Not everyone is a candidate — ask us and we'll assess it.
Grinding can wear teeth down to the gumline, because the reflex that would normally stop you doesn't work while you're asleep. Where stress is the trigger, removing it helps. If the grinding continues, we can fit a nightguard to prevent further damage.
